Beyond the Six – Reconnecting Through Horses

For those who stand watch and for those who stand beside them. Beyond the Six is designed for first responders and their families. Through guided, hands-on interactions with horses, participants explore trust, communication, and connection in a calm and supportive environment. Horses reflect our emotions and energy, offering honest feedback that helps deepen understanding, of self and of each other. Together, families rediscover balance, resilience, and meaningful connection beyond the demands of duty.

Because those who have everyone else’s six deserve a space, and a herd, that has theirs.

Equine Assisted Learning is a learner-based educational experience with horses. More specifically its an experiential (learning by doing) approach to human development that encourages individual and team growth through interactions with horses, on the ground, no riding, no mounting. The focus is on learning and life skill development.

What Equine Assisted Learning is NOT:

- NOT Therapy – we are not licensed, degreed or certified in therapy. Although being in the presence of, and working with horses, is therapeutic we leave the therapy to those that are qualified to do that holy work.

- NOT riding and NO mounted activities in our EAL Programs – our view is when a horse is mounted it changes the dynamic of the relationship between horse and human to one of control rather than one of connection, our focus is primarily on connection to self and others led by the horse, not on the horse.

We look at human life skills like a tree, the thicker the trunk of the tree the stronger the tree and its ability to stand tall during calm days and endure the storms that pass. Each layer of bark represents a skill, the more skills, the stronger you are - a few examples:

- Effective communication
- Problem solving
- Leadership
- Emotional Intelligence (self-awareness, empathy)
- Boundaries
- Problem Solving

Horses are naturally highly astute prey animals and react only to the stimulus around them. Their priority is to stay safe, and it is because of this they can sense the stimulus (energy/emotion) within the humans they are working with. A few more interesting facts:

- Horses consistently model assertiveness and teach us how.
- Horses can't lie or over think a participants motive.
- Horses feedback is honest and instant.
- Horses have natural "herd behaviours" that require trust, respect and teamwork from all members of the team.
- Horses automatically respond to confusion and frustration as these feelings can put the herd at risk.
- They lead through assuredness - not brute force.
- Horses have distinct personalities and through this, they all have a different methods of teaching.

Because the programs are designed with outcomes related to empathy and other emotional skills all participants must be at least 8 years old AND at the cognitive age of 8. This is when there has been significant development in these areas of the human brain

The only required clothing for adults is closed toe shoes – this is for your safety.
All participants under the age of 18 are required to wear a helmet during our time with the horse.
Dress for the weather – for now we run our programs outdoors and most of the year.

Safety is our number one priority – if the weather is offering unsafe conditions for driving or for being outdoors for extended periods of time (60 min) we will work with you to reschedule.

As small as 2 and maximum of 8. If you have a group outside this range, contact us to discuss.
